The Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin is conceived as a joint effort between the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL), the Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) and the FAU University Hospital in Erlangen. The new scientific center aims to apply advanced methods from experimental physics and mathematics to basic biomedical research with an emphasis on the intercellular microenvironment.
On the MPL side, MPZPM will host one division and some of the activities of other MPL divisions who are engaged in biomedical research. The FAU will be represented by three Chairs in biophysics, biomathematics and medical physics. In addition, two independent research groups (equivalent to nontenure-track assistant professorship) will be financed by the Max Planck Society and the FAU University Hospital, while three other such groups will be hosted based on external funding.
